Be Safe While Enjoying Your Pool This Summer

Pool Safety Tips

As we head into another beautiful summer season, the pool covers come off and swimsuits get dug out of the back of dresser drawers. Keep these pool safety tips in mind to help ensure this summer around the pool is as safe, as it is fun. Pool Safety Tips

  • Always watch your child and never leave a child unattended around a pool or a spa.
  • Install a minimum four foot tall fence or pool-barrier around the pool, spa or portable pool. It will prevent a child from getting over, under or through and keep the child from gaining access to the pool when no adults are around.
  • Gate should be opened out from the pool and self- closing or self-latching. When a child pushes the gate to enter the pool area, the gate will be closed and latched so they will have no access.
  • Install a pool alarm to detect accidental or unauthorized entrance to the pool by your child.
  • Install a pool or spa safety cover and maintain it in good working condition.
  • Reaching and throwing life-saving equipment like life saver ring, floats, and poles should be kept at pool area all the time.
  • Make sure any pool or spa in your home has compliant drain covers.

Save Lives, Learn Water Safety Skills

  • Learn to swim
  • Teach your children to swim and some basic water safety skills.
  • Learn how to perform CPR on children and adults.
  • Understand basic lifesaving procedures, so you won’t panic and can help in a pool emergency.
  • Have a telephone close by at all times so you can call 911.
  • If a child is missing, check the pool first.

Every year there are thousands of American families who suffer from swimming pool tragedies; all these are preventable by implementing some of the pool safety tips mentioned above.  According to the US Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) about 300 children younger than 5 years old drown in swimming pools and spas, and more than 3,200 children go to hospital emergency rooms because of drowning injuries in pools and spas. Precaution is better than having a tragedy happen; follow these pool safety tips to save lives.
